The subjects that are the elderly women who live alone received Group Theraplay for a total of 18 sessions, with 1 session allotted per a week. The subjects of this research were 30 elderly women who were aged above 65 attending one Multipurpose Senior Center in Seoul. The 26 subjects excluding 4 people who had obvious disabilities in their cognitive functions were divided into two groups randomly and Group Theraplay was conducted to the experiment group. The difference in scores of self-esteem between the experiment group and the control group was compared. The data were analyzed with paired t-test using spss 12.0 statistics software. The result of this study was as follows. The score of self-esteem in the controlled group decreased significantly(t= 2.364,p=0.036). This result supports the proceeding researches that people in old age experience a decline of their self-esteem due to the sensory and cognitive loss, the loss of family and friends, the loss of income and career, the loss of their health so that they are in danger. In contrast to this, the score of the self-esteem in the experiment group has increased after the experiment comparing to the score before the experiment even though it was a bit below a significant difference statistically(t=-2.163, p=0.051). In conclusion, Group Theraplay can prevent a decline of the self-esteem in the elderly women who live alone or improve their self-esteem to some degree.
